Congratulations to Ruth Kirby, to be appointed Silk in 2021

17th December 2020

A huge congratulations to Ruth Kirby, who will be appointed to the rank of Queen’s Counsel in a ceremony (to be announced in due course) when the Lord Chancellor will present her Letters Patent on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen. Ruth takes the total number of silks at 4PB to 17.

The appointment ceremony that usually takes place in March has been postponed to a later date, as a result of the pandemic. However, arrangements have been made to allow those to be appointed to use the title from the time the ceremony would have taken place.

Ruth’s practice is reflected in the reported cases in which she has been involved. The bulk of her work remains in the Family Division, including Court of Protection work. Ruth deals with all aspects of private and public family law including domestic and international abduction and stranding; wardship and the Inherent Jurisdiction; complex family disputes concerning children; and care proceedings and adoption. She has particular experience in radicalisation public law cases and in representing very religiously-observant families in private law disputes.

Having dual jurisdictional qualifications, Ruth also acts as an expert witness in Irish Family Law cases and has rights of audience before the Irish courts.
