A judge’s reasoning for making a special guardianship order in favour of a one-year-old child’s foster carer, rather than in favour of his family in Ghana, did not have the necessary depth and detail to underpin a decision of that importance. She had failed to balance competing factors, adequately weigh the risks inherent in each placement and conduct a systematic analysis of the welfare checklist.
