29th July 2025

5 members of 4PB have been invited to speak at the 9th World Congress on Family Law & Children’s Rights. The theme of this congress is Children Caught in Conflict – Inspiring Positive Change.

Barbara Mills KC, Chair of the Bar Council of England and Wales, and Joint Head of 4PB, delivers her presentation, “Who is looking after the family lawyers?” discussing the well-being of family lawyers and making the case for well-being being a non-negotiable part of practice for all family lawyers.

Christopher Hames KC will Chair the panel discussion “International Adoptions – Protection of Children in the Context of Intercountry Adoption” with panellists Hilka Hollmann (Dawson Cornwell), Judge Fiona Mwale, and Lavanya Regunathan (RFKN Legal). The panel will explore the global operation and challenges of the 1993 Hague Convention on intercountry adoption.

Jacqueline Renton KC and 4PB Associate Member, Rachael Kelsey join “Children and War: A Global Perspective” alongside Forum Shah (Dawson Cornwell), Stephen Cullen (Miles & Stockbridge P.C.) and Edwin Freedman (Law Offices of Edwin Freedman) examining how courts in England and Wales, Israel, and the USA address return applications under the 1980 Hague Convention in the context of war.

Finally, 4PB Associate Member, Professor Marilyn Freeman delivers “Children and Young People: Identity, Selfhood and Family Law” alongside Professor Nicola Taylor (University of Otago), and Chair, Dr Chelsea Tobin (Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre). This presentation addresses why change is needed in the way we think about identity and selfhood in the family justice and related fields.
