4PB Shortlisted for Chambers of the Year at the 2024 Bar Pro Bono Awards

Michael Edwards instructed to represent the UK Health Security Agency in the UK Covid-19 Inquiry.

The UK Covid-19 Inquiry, which began on 28 June 2022, has been set up to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and learn lessons for the future. The Inquiry’s work is guided by its Terms of Reference.

The inquiry investigations have been organised into Modules, and throughout each, the Inquiry hears evidence from witnesses, experts and Core Participants through a series of corresponding hearings.

Michael Edwards will be working on Module 5 (procurement – looking at the procurement and distribution of key healthcare supplies) and Module 7 (test, trace, and isolate – looking at the effectiveness of the strategy put in place by the UK Government). Both Modules are listed for hearings in 2025.

New Reported Case: AB (A Child) [2024] EWHC 586 (Fam)

Dorothea Gartland KC led Edward Bennett of Harcourt Chambers in this decision by the President of the Family Division in which the Court granted the applicants the parental order they sought in circumstances where they had already adopted their child. The Court accepted the analysis and submissions made having considered the effect of s.67(1) of the ACA 2002 and s.54(1) of the HFEA 2008.

Five 4PB members represented various parties in the matter of R v M [2024] EWHC 720 (Fam)

Christopher Hames KC, Michael Gration KC, Mark Jarman KC, Jacqueline Renton Mani Singh Basi and Frankie Shama appeared in the judgment of  R v M (Hague Convention; Withdrawal of Application and Art. 16 (Parental Responsibility)) [2024] EWHC 720 (Fam) which was published today. The case deals with a withdrawal of a 1980 Hague Convention case and an application for recognition of rights of parental responsibility pursuant to Article 16 of the 1996 Hague Convention.
